A currency unrelated to money
Jan. 9th, 2004 10:32 amSans quotes, for Frenziewolf. :)
Almost immediately upon writing the big BE post I realized just how fixated I was being on having it my way. This can be a good thing sometimes, don't get me wrong, but in this case it limited my view of how Boomer Express should go.
I'm actually very surprised that it was so self-centered. It didn't seem that way at the time, but it was. My issue was just in relation to 'me' and 'mine,' without looking at the strip from a more objective viewpoint. I discounted Tyrnn's opinion and influence because it wasn't my own, because it's not the way I would have done it.
Taking the blinders off with this particular situation, I can see where else that kind of thinking pops up. The main reason I dislike Vampire: the Masquerade is because it's not the kind of game I would play. I don't like politics, I don't like vampires, I don't like angsty, gothic socialites bemoaning the existential nature of their supernatural existence, so I don't play it.
Yes, that's what Vampire has become, that doesn't mean it has to be that way. Just like a more comedic Boomer Express doesn't have to be a bad thing. I can work with both in that context and still have fun with it. Really, Tyrnn's ideas for BE are not inherently bad or off-putting, it's my perception that's making them so.
So, with that realized, I'm going to rewrite next week's strips to see if I can form it more to that kind of style, while still making sure the characters ring true. Something tells me I could watch a lot of "Buffy" for this, and thankfully Virginia has most of the series so I can start watching it over the weekend.
Oh, and the Sabbat Vampire LARP is suddenly looking...better, now. I have a good concept now, so I'll be reconfiguring his stats and writing up a good background, and we'll see where it flies.
Not all I wanted to say, but I have to keep this short since I'm at work, and I need coffee.

So I was shelving books today when I realized the back of my mouth felt...off, way back on the right hand side. Wasn't a very good feeling, either, since my wisdom tooth has a cavity back there. When I probed the offending tooth with my tongue, I felt something give, and fall. I spit, and what to my wondering, panicked eyes should appear but a big chunk of tooth.
All of my other teeth are fine; there's something called fluorosis, the dentist said, that renders my teeth quite resistant to cavities and disease. It usually appears in people who have had an overabundance of fluoride growing up, and I have Baltimore water and Crest toothpaste to thank for that. Discolored teeth, sure, but rock solid. My wisdom teeth came in too late to cash in on that fluoride extravaganza, so now they're flaking away inside my head.
I need them out. The idea of a tooth rotting inside my head is about as far uncool as I can think of. So, as soon as I'm able, I'm scouting dentists and oral surgeons to get an estimate. Whatever it is, it's going to hurt (in more ways than one), but I'm seriously spooked here. I'm hoping I can get all four out for $600 or so; it'll take a few months to pay off, but I can't see any other options.
In other news, my housing situation has gotten...interesting. I have the opportunity to move with another roommate into the apartment next door, and I was thinking about it pretty hard. Tonight, we had a meeting between two apartments and one other, and it turns out we won't be getting a 'replacement roomie' nearly as easily as we thought. It's all good, though; the other apartment probably needed it more.
Meanwhile, I can't even think about moving out until we get a fourth roommate, and a possible 'replacement' for me. I'm not even sure I want to move at this point; we'll see how I feel about it in a few months. Right now, though, I'm staying where I am. Well, I might be moving into Delphi's old room, which could rock rather hard. *grin* I can definitely use the closet space.
In yet more news, saw my first episode of "Firefly," and I do believe Joss Whedon is rapidly becoming one of my favorite writers. I might have to fall into "Angel" sometime soon. Just seeing one episode, I'm sorely disappointed Fox took it off the air. But then, chuckleheads like me ignored it the first time around, so there's no wonder. ;) If you can, see it; there's a DVD set of all 19(?) episodes so far.
The writing jag continues following my small epiphany. I feel like my options have expanded limitlessly; there's so much more that I'm able to write about now that my field of vision isn't quite so narrow. Taking the blinders off will do that to you.
Anyway, I'll be working on Boomer Express, Salvation and Grey Warming Over this weekend. There's a Changeling game this Sunday, too, so that'll be...interesting. I have Eric and Aaron only, it looks like, so I'm not sure how it's going to play out.
Well, I'm off.
