 It's been a little while. :)

This week I've been recovering from a cold I picked up at the wedding of Boss Dog and Chill Otter while trying to settle in to the rhythm of work. The cold is a small price to pay for the wedding, which was held at the San Diego Safari Park with maybe 50 or so of their closest friends. We went down on Wednesday night to really take advantage of the vacation, and the pretty sweet AirBNBs that were rented out for the occasion. We also got to meet so many of their other friends, really sweet people who brought the spirit of service with them to make the weekend run smoothly. It was an honor to watch these folks roll up their sleeves to handle the logistics of what was essentially a week-long sleepover.

Snepperboo finally got to take me to Universal Studios Hollywood after all this time in California! It was a theme park, and increasingly those seem to be places where you pay to be advertised to by giant corporations on just how much of the pop culture landscape they're responsible for. For Universal, it was The Simpsons, Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda, The Fast and the Furious, and Jurassic Park -- with smaller splashes of The Mummy, Transformers, and a few other things. Honestly? It was a good time!

We rode The Simpsons ride (OK), the Mummy indoor-dark coaster (awesome!), and Bowser's Challenge at Super Mario World (super cool!). The highlight for me was honestly the Studio Tour, like the basic bitch that I am. But ever since I was a little kid watching the commercials about the Earthquake! experience I've wanted to do it -- and I finally got to. The baby jackalope in me was so tickled seeing the Hydrogen fuel truck drop from the street above, the support pillars of the subway buckle and shake, and a flood of water come down the stairwell. Just like in the movies! :O

It was very neat to see how many locations on the studio lot have been used in like, dozens of movies and TV shows. It'll be fun to watch movies and be like "I recognize that lot".

The wedding on Saturday was so, so beautiful. We spent the morning at the San Diego Zoo (or part of it); saw some big cats, a kangaroo, a *ton* of cool birds, and the only platypi in captivity outside of Australia. There was a safari tram ride, but the gentle rocking and soothing voice or our guide made short work of my consciousness.

I started to get weepy around the beginning of the ceremony and couldn't stop crying through the end. The vows were sincere and beautiful, and each part of the proceedings were carefully chosen for their significance. Chill Otter *hates* dancing in public, so we orchestrated their "first dance" moment so the parents got to see the grooms on their own before a bunch of fursuits came in to make it a celebration. The reception went on for a while, but we dipped out early for the debauched after-party. That's when I felt myself coming down with something, though, so I took one of the last shuttles(!) back to the quiet house.

On Sunday, we met a local unicorn friend for pizza and catching up and then I went back to sleep for like, 12 hours. Somewhere in the middle there we binged S2 of Vox Machina; I had forgotten how big a step up from S1 it was, and it made me hype for S3!

Over the whole weekend, I got to chat with a lot of Boss Dog's friends -- including mutual ones I don't get to see that often. It was great having late-night, giggling conversations with so many cool, smart folks. <3 It was a deeply restorative time that made me feel more myself than I had been in a long time. I came back full of phlegm and gratitude.

I haven't hit the ground running as well as I wanted to, but that's always the way. I'm still making my way through the workload of the day job, and working to balance that with my other hobbies: writing, reading, exercise, video games, mindfulness. More than that, I really want to reconnect with the folks I've been pulling away from over the year for various reasons. I'm once again reminded of how important it is to have a community, and what a joy it is to build this chosen family with others.

This month my focus is on writing. Even though Nanowrimo is no longer with us, I'd like to rebuild the practice of being regularly creative, finding the joy in the that whole process. I'd really like to dive into worldbuilding for the D&D game, start setting up for my next campaign, and...well, actually get some short story writing in. After a late-night conversation with a certain photography dog, I'm ready to absorb the identity of a writer once again. But in order to be true with that, I've got to actually, you know, work on stuff.
