NaPoeWriMo, Day 14
May. 14th, 2009 09:42 pmPhoning It In
After a while you get to know everyone's style
Who uses partial sentences or too many commas
to lend extra weight to ideas that aren't very heavy
to begin with
who uses the same word to begin each line
over and over
(and who likes to use self-referential parenthetical asides)
After a while you can tell the people who have gotten lazy
or who got stuck for ideas at 11 pm
and just wanted to turn in something goddamnit
and who is trying too hard to distance themselves
from old habits good and bad
just to blaze that new trail
you know who makes it harder on themselves than it needs to be
who doesn't know when to end their lines
those who end them too soon
and even those who have no ideas about variance
Yet these people will often surprise you
once you get to know their packaging
lulling you into a sense of familiarity
is a favored tactic of poets who have been at this for a while
