The Sun Goes Down
Jan. 12th, 2006 08:48 amI saw "Elf" last night. Despite the relentless skewering from
toob and nearly everyone here at the Cube, I liked it. It was mildly funny, really sweet and surprisingly good. It's totally standard-pat as a holiday story, but Will Ferrell actually brings across childlike enthusiasm and joy believably. I have to admit, I was charmed. Three stars, or something.
I found a laminated bookmark edition of the Metta Sutta while I was cleaning books yesterday. I'll take it as a sign. :) It's a really big bookmark, by the way. I've also been enthralled by this poem by Gil Scott-Heron, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. I'm thinking about doing something with it for today's (or maybe tomorrow's) poem.
There are a few ideas for character designs online that I've been playing around with; two are nicked from A.I. (that movie with Haley Joel Osment, not you know, robotic programs are anything). I really adored Teddy (who doesn't?) and ever since them I've been mildly intrigued by the idea of playing a supertoy of some sort...only a more advanced version. I'll have to admit, Greg the Bunny had a part to play in this as well. :)
The other idea is a bit more nebulous. After the 'false ending,' there's this 40 minute sequence that takes place sometime in the far future, and the robots/aliens presented there along with their technology were absolutely fascinating. The odd, piecemeal moving ships, the sleek elongated design, the idea of 'communal download/electronic empathy', really...sparked me in keen ways. I was thinking of maybe making a rabbity version of those guys, incredibly tall but wispy-thin, with that pleasing, glowy amber color. Of course, I'd have to pervert him and find a way for him to change size and mass, but hey, there you go. :) It's something that I'll have to muck about with when I have time (read: never).
Also was thinking about a giant panda character of some sort. There's been this idea of a Buddhist macro panda floating around in my head for quite some time, and it still appeals to me for all of the right reasons. Huge and ponderous, but slow and gentle. Also, I really love the Eastern-style dress of this guy. Thanks,
sylffor, for corrupting me. :)
I think I might be coming down with some sort of cold; I hope it doesn't turn out to be nearly as severe as what's been floating around locally for quite some time now. It's definitely time to indulge in overdoses of vitamin C, hot tea and soup, rice and plenty of rest. I really can't afford to be sick right now.
Work, then Angel, which has actually gotten interesting. There are some thoughts on it, but I'll have to wait and see what happens before I can really say anything.
