All right, now that that's over... :)
Last night the usual suspects congregated at V's place and we watched "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." "Angel" is on hiatus until we finish out the 5th season; "Buffy" is so damned good I want to stick it through to the end instead of trading off series disc-by-disc as we had been doing.
We started off the evening with "The Body," which any Buffy fan knows is probably one of the hardest episodes to watch. I think I might have stated this before, but what really involves me in a character's death isn't necessarily the death itself; it's how that death affects everyone else. Seeing everyone else get ripped up over it is where the real tragedy lies. So, the entire episode, with everyone stumbling around sort of unsure what to do, is...very hard to watch. Anya and Willow especially.
Joss really nailed the disorientation that ensues when something that major happens. The entire episode had a surreal, strange context, and the cacophany of images (the Christmas scene, followed by the silence that follows Buffy discovering Joyce; the way the camera cuts off half the paramedic's face; the strange audio overlay of the doctor's voice following the autopsy) combine to create a very powerful landscape of shock-induced nightmare. The only thing that I felt was a mistake was the inclusion of a vampire in the episode; it felt jarring and tacky to include that, though I could understand why he did. Even in the midst of such a catastrophe in a personal life, the world never stops turning.
The best thing to come from Joyce's sudden death is the catalyst of change for Buffy, who realizes how cold she's gotten towards everyone close to her. The drive to love, and to confess her weaknesses, suddenly puts her miles ahead in terms of her personal development. In terms of story, it's easily the climax to what's been the most satisfying season so far. Though, admittedly, we've got three more episodes to go before the end...
OK, I'm done geeking out now. Really, I promise!
For obvious reasons I'm in a kind of somber and introspective mood. Thanks to a quote of mine
I'm tired of writing about writing, honestly; I'd much rather just sit down and *do* it. The trick is, of course, doing it. There's so much that I'd like to get into, though, and it's hard to pick one thing and run with it.
I have decided, though, that I'll set a goal of submitting poetry to at least two publications every month in 2006. This, of course, means writing a lot more, so I'd better get started. :)
This weekend will be busy; but then, who *won't* be busy this weekend? ;) Work today and tomorrow, Cy's Werewolf game tonight (probably), and I think I'll take Saturday night to work on my game. Christmas on Sunday, and we'll be hosting a dinner for wayward furs and friends at either our or V's place. Then on Monday I get fitted for a crown. It sucks that I get my tooth fixed the day *after* Christmas dinner, but them's the breaks I suppose.
Oh! And one more thing.
