Tunnel Vision
May. 20th, 2005 05:27 pmAfter I got back from Roz' Awesome Shindig in Kansas City, work pretty much latched on to my neck and shook me like a rag doll. Well, the shaking is only going to get worse; now that Adam's here, the schedule is going to change once again, and well...we all know the drill by now. Since I'm not particularly finicky about most of my schedule, mine is the first to be changed.
Not to talk crap about the rest of the fine employees here at this world-class Bookshop, but man, it's pretty bad when I'm one of the most reliable employees. Heidi keeps flaking mostly because of baby-daddy drama and events outside of her control, but everyone else are being primadonnaish with the schedules and taking time off and calling in and having really loooong lunches and all this other stuff. My biggest sin, usually, is checking e-mail two or three times a day, because I'm addicted. :)
On the up side, I'm working a full 40 hour week *and* I got the raise, so my paycheck goes up quite a large chunk starting next week. This makes me very happy. Having a schedule stay the same for three months is now my biggest request at the job.
For the past, say, two weeks, I haven't been sleeping well because a) I'm getting used to the new schedule and b) I'm usually so stressed about work and/or other things that I'm mostly too 'on' to get to sleep when I should. My internal alarm clock is set for 7 a.m., so I usually get up around that time regardless of whether I've gotten two hours of sleep or ten. It's really annoying, but very handy for making sure I'm not late!
Anyway, because of the low-grade insomnia my general mood has deteriorated over time, and this past week I've caught myself being snippish and short with people in ways I've actively avoided since...way back in college. I'm starting to check that, and it's working, but the real reason is I'm just so stressed. I need to start actively destressifying more often than I do.
The Linux project is going; Harvey (my Linux box) is endearingly crotchety, and I'm getting to know his quirks well.
lazarus sent me some RAM that I'll stick in on Saturday and we'll see if that makes him stop acting like such an old fart. :) My money's on 'somewhat'. Right now the biggest trick is trying to get it to play video files; the programs Ubuntu installed for that just flat-out refuse to work, and I haven't had much time to really get my hands dirty fixing it. So this weekend, as much as my frustration will allow, I'll be seeing what I can do about that. I'm not sure how well the video and audio card will take to something like streaming movie files, but we'll see. Now that I'm firmly entrenched I want to see if I can't improve Harvey a little bit, buff him out with new video and audio stuff if it's necessary.
I haven't forgotten about the meme I said I would get to when I got back from KC. :) I'll be getting to that tonight and tomorrow as well. There are an awful lot of ideas floating around in my head for writing right now, too, but I need to seriously just catch one or two of them and work on them exclusively. "Salvation" is definitely one, since I seem to have snagged a partner-in-crime some time ago, and I'll have to see about maybe writing some sort of macrophile fiction to get in the habit of writing short stories.
This weekend I'm looking forward to doing nothing, mostly. Just puttering around in my room, setting up Carson (my Windows box) to be the media guy over there; I'll have to talk to Delphi or maybe Joey about networking them.
