I've Got The Land, I've Got You
Jul. 18th, 2004 09:19 amI'm here at the Bookshop early on Sunday morning, to get in some extra hours before my trip next month (more on that later). It's kind of relaxing and more than a little unnerving to have this whole place to myself, no sounds except for the ones I make, the pops and cracks of the wood and shelving throughout the store, and Billy Corgan screeching through our bad, old speakers. :)
It's easy to imagine this place being haunted. So many books here from so many different people, so many hands contributing to make this place what it is. From the people who write these books to the people who make them, to the people who buy them and give them to family members and friends, who store them and leave them forgotten to the people who sell them, to my bosses, my coworkers, down to me. Thousands of hands and minds went into this collection; hundreds of people come and go through these doors in the guise of flesh or books. Stories that go beyond what's written down are things we'll never know most of the time, but they're there, infused.
It's very easy to imagine this place as haunted.
Every once in a while I have to stop and remind myself just how blown away I am by working here, with the people I do. And how grateful I am to be doing just what I'm doing, right now.
