Hey there, all...

Today, after seeing [livejournal.com profile] 2_gryphon for the first time in oh, two days, it suddenly occurred to me that I should be at work in two minutes and my normal ride in was nowhere to be seen. I went upstairs, knocked on his door, found it to be unlocked, knocked on his *bedroom* door, stood for a minute, knocked again, repeated same about five times, and decided there's no way he's getting up.

So, I went next door, and repeated the process...twice. By now, I was uncomfortably late and slightly panicked. I didn't have the money for cab-fare and more importantly, no phone to call a cab with anyway. A wee bit flustered, I went downstairs to knock on my roommate's door. This is the worst part of my day, loudly interrupting peaceful sleep in order to alert other folks to my needs. I *always* feel crappy, and it *never* gets easier.

Much to my relief...chagrin...no answer there, either. I decided I would bite the bullet and walk to work if I had to. I knocked on 2's door, asked him for *his* phone, called Charles and told him I'd be a bit late because I was walking in to work.

"OK," said Charles, "don't forget to wear a good hat." Good old Charles. :)

Anyway, earlier this week in Arkansas, people were walking around in shorts and eating ice cream because it was a balmy 60-odd degrees. Today, it's very cloudy, and wintry-cold. Brr. And I'm walking in it!

The walk itself isn't so bad. There were flocks of birds flitting about and doing their bird-things, and that's always fun to watch. :) I had just started to enjoy it when I walked past a minivan that had a "No Iraq War" bumper sticker. The lady inside called out "YOO HOO!", and I guess that finally broke through my musical-avian induced revelrie. I blinked at her, and she asked me where I was going. "Dickson Street," I said. "I can take you to the University," she offered.

"Great." I smiled and jumped in, and she took off.

She was a woman of many lives. Her most current one was a college student/social worker/poet who was going after her doctorate. She was taking a pretty graduate-level-sounding class, and she hated it. She had been a choir teacher before that, a folk/rock musician before *that*, and a writer's wife before that. Her current boyfriend was also a writer, as well as a retired psychologist. And for some reason, we hit it off immediately.

We exchanged e-mail addresses and promised to write each other ASAP. She offered to take me to a free Writer's Workshop in Springdale this weekend, and the temptation is strong. :)

It's times like these that bolster my basic optimism that people are good if you give them the chance to be. :)
