He Must Be Happy
Nov. 8th, 2023 08:08 amI spoke with N.B. yesterday afternoon about the Community Manager position. It was a very good conversation, and I think we developed a pretty good rapport overall. Most of his questions were about my...comfort level with certain demands, like commuting to SF at least twice a month (but preferably once a week), basically learning how to manage projects and initiatives all by myself, some evening and weekend hours if there's an event, and the possibility of having too much work to do in a short amount of time.
Honestly, I'm fine with all of it. The thing I'm least looking forward to is the commute to SF but hopefully Caltrain makes that a little easier most of the time. I can drive down to the Santa Clara station, maybe hop an express train up to the city in the morning and duck out mid-afternoon. If I got the job, I'd start with the intention of hitting the city once a week and see how big of a pain it is.
My questions were mostly about the audience because I'm most curious about the people who would be making up the community. There *are* headwinds there -- most of the folks I'd be serving are elderly and a little tech-averse, and many speak English as a second language. I think the best thing we could do to set the foundation for this community is finding a way to guide them to the benefits of using technology, so the first year would be able getting folks comfortable with the platform and setting up events that would have tangible, immediate benefits. That way, our first community members could serve as guides for folks coming into the community and folks are primed to be helpful and curious from the jump.
That's the dream, anyway. Overall, I feel comfortable with my assessment submission and interview; it was a true honor to be considered for the position -- especially since I'm definitely punching above my weight class here. If I don't get the job, no hard feelings, and I can walk away feeling good about giving it my best shot.
We also went to Kaiser for our flu shot and COVID booster, which took longer than anticipated. I knew it was a risk to take both of them at the same time but it didn't take me out TOO badly. R. got rolled by the booster, which made for an uncomfortable night for him, poor thing. I've never seen anyone have "I'm freezing" seizures in bed; it looked pretty concerning.
Worked late yesterday and made truffle-butter steak sandwiches afterward. We saw a half-episode of "Wednesday", which is turning into an interesting thought experiment on balancing the abilities of the protagonist. Wednesday Addams frequently crosses over into this "try-hard" aura where she has this dismissive one-liner for everything and finds a way to show up any character set up in opposition to her. At the risk of invoking the name, at worst the show makes her this goth Mary Sue who rolls over any of the stakes presents to her and it gets tiresome after a while.
I think the show is setting up Wednesday's roommate, counselor, headmistress, and others as foils who will turn into her support network once she lets him in. Her roommate, especially, feels like the most formidable voice of well-meaning pushback -- in the first episode, they divide their room down the middle with the giant circular window throwing one half of the room in colored glass reflection, with the other half textbook goth. It's one of those set design things that serves as a visual metaphor for their relationship, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the visuals progress through the season.
Today is going to be kinda busy if the schedule holds. Work, then gym, making dinner, and the Godswake game after that. I still haven't figured out how to write consistently; I may have to use Google Docs for game prep and Patreon stories just for the ability to work on multiple computers. I don't think it'll be a big deal to install Dropbox and Scrivener on my work computer, but I'd rather not take chances.
