I had a "check-in" meeting with my manager yesterday to clear up a few questions I had about the new reports I'm handling. I also remembered that Google exists, so I can do my own research about the cleanrooms, safety cabinets, and fume hoods we're certifying. THAT research has been fun, actually, and really helps to orient me around these reports.

Even though I've worried a lot about my pace, she says that her expectations for me are *very* light. Our personal goal for productivity should be based on the number of certifications we process per week or month, and each service order we're assigned could have anywhere from 1 to 100 certifications. She says that she assigns the typical QC Analyst about 30 certifications a day, but she understands it will take a while for me to work up to 150 certs per week. Right now, she wants me to do 5 a day (25/week).

That's shockingly low to me. It means the order I received a couple days ago will take me nearly two weeks to finish! I've been going a lot faster than that, so it's a relief that I'm over-shooting the curve.

Knowing that I can take a bit more time, I'm thinking about writing "personal" wiki entries about the services we offer and the types of environments we monitor in Google Docs. I could do something in Word, too, now that I have automatic Word to PDF conversion on this computer. It's something worth thinking about, and could be a great way to demonstrate I've learned the basics and advanced on-boarding stuff. It might even help with on-boarding the next person!

We've been watching FX's Fargo on Thursday nights over the summer, and now we're up to season 3 with Ewan MacGregor pulling double-duty as estranged (twin?) brothers. The first two episodes are the funniest since the first season, and so far I really dig the vibe. The essential conflict is over inheritance; one brother chose the Corvette over a collection of postage stamps that turned out to be extremely valuable. So, the other brother leverages the profit to buy real estate, becoming the "parking lot kind of Minnesota". The Corvette brother believes he's owed a substantial share of this wealth for giving up his original birthright. It reminds me of the story of Jacob and Esau, but I'm not sure how intentional that is.

Season 1 was a very cool adaptation of the original Coen Brothers movie, with enough changes to expand the story. The acting is just fantastic, too. Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton are having a great time, and the Frances MacDormand stand-in (whose name escapes me at the moment) is also amazing.

Season 2 is a bit less successful. Jesse Plemons takes over the Martin Freeman role, with Hakeem Woodbine swapping out for Billy Bob. It starts slow but really picks up as the season goes along, and the back half is such a fun roller coaster. I think the only reason the performances seem less effective is that they have to follow such an amazing S1 cast. And maybe the cast settles into their characters as time goes on.

But S3, so far, is starting out with all cylinders firing. Ewan MacGregor is doing really impressive work here as both the oily victim and hapless criminal, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the most-likeable "Lady Macbeth" so far. David Thewlis is the psychopathic hitman wreaking havoc in the lives of these humble people and he oozes low-brow yet eloquent menace. A lot of folks consider S3 one of the weaker seasons, and maybe the tires fall off the ride at some point. But so far, the set up has won me over!

I haven't been able to do much beyond work, gym, and cooking. Duolingo, reading, and (especially) writing have been spotty at best so I'm going to have to figure things out there. I'll have a lot more time when R. heads to Arkansas, but it will take some significant willpower to stay on the straight and narrow instead of you know, eating edibles and watching Press Your Luck the whole time. :P At the very least, I should be able to handle all six habits each day he's out with family. Maybe it's a chance to "be" the person I want to be; a dress rehearsal so to speak.
