I remembered a dream today! I don't remember them often, so the fact that I can still recall it at one in the afternoon is pretty momemtous. It was a really neat dream, too, so that might have something to do with it.

There was a town that was new...the more I think about it, the less I'm sure it was a real town and not some virtual place that was...100% immersive. Like, when you were there you were THERE. Anyway, the town itself was really neat; it was basically clustered groups of buildings spaced between large tracks of park and forest. There were also homes built into trees or in burrows underground, or above the shops that people owned on Main Street. Everything was open and sunny, and people wore Victorian clothing without any of the moral baggage that seems to go with it. Top hats and spats for everyone!

One of the neatest things was this...teleportation system. It worked on technomancy (think Eberron), I seem to remember, and basically it only cost a penny per use. There were numerous teleportation platforms set up around town, in every park, and every few blocks on Main Street. The spells that were used to set them up were hellaciously expensive, and the mages who built all the apparati got monthly tithes from the government for their services. So even if you just set up one, you were set for a few years.

There was a post office with a really weird system. It was...a complex of buildings, and the names of everyone in town was posted above them. If your name was on a building, that was where your mailbox was. I specifically remember seeing the names of Duncan and Eliahn (as MFK Azure).

Anyway, more people were teleporting in all the time to live in this unnamed town. I was there as one of the Mayors (I'm a Leo, shut up), so I was running around in a top hat and tails and spats looking very important. I was also a rabbit. At some point I started shrinking, one of the other Mayors started growing, and I had to run around town finding someone to fix it. Stairs got harder and harder to navigate, and I started having to stand on top of chairs and tables to talk to people. Then I remembered that it seemed unusually bright in my bedroom, and the alarm hadn't gone off, and I was waking up late. *sigh*

The whole getting smaller thing reminded me of "Little King December" which I suppose now I have to read at some point. Ah well, like I need another excuse to pick up yet another book I don't have a bookshelf for. ;)

It was a really vivid dream, and despite the fact that there was a rising panic about me ending up a few inches tall by nightfall (and how was I going to be a respectable Mayor then?!?) I woke up with a happy warm feeling. I might have to sit on this setting a little bit and start writing for it...once I clear the enormous backlog of other stuff I need to get done.

In other news, things feel really, really busy. The holiday season is gearing up already at work, and the bump in traffic is notable. Last night I sold $2000 in five hours. For some perspective, we sold $2000 from the time we opened at 10 am to the time I took the register at 6 pm. I don't know what it was about people wanting to get books and movies after dinner, but there you go.

I've been managing to write every day, which feels really good. I've gotten the taste for it, so it's one of those things now where I feel weird if I haven't gotten something done on my laptop or PC by the time I've gotten to bed. Nothing worth showing yet, but that'll change soon I hope. Won't say any more, unless I jinx it. :)

Right now I'm reading a few things: The Line Between by Peter Beagle is one of them. I just finished the scrap of a sequel he's planning to The Last Unicorn, "Two Hearts." (How's that for proper punctuation, Lazarus?) I'm not ashamed to admit it made me cry. I can't mention why without giving stuff away, but it did occur to me that King Lyr is a much more tragic figure than I've ever given him credit for. Just knowing that eventually I'll be back in that world at some point is making me shiver. :) Next up is a quartet of fables he's written, which should be fun. Beagle has a habit of mocking the very genres he produces such examplary work in.

I'm also reading The Dragon Knight by Gordon R. Dickson. It's a sequel to The Dragon and the George, which wasn't as unbearable as Spacepaw. This new story is...all right, but not much to write home about. Only I am.

And then there's a couple of Zen books: Encouraging Words by Robert Aitken and one of those beginner's pamphlets on Zen Buddhism. I've tended to follow the spirit of Zen...mostly...without really knowing the letter of it, and this is something I'd like to rectify. Before I join a sangha I'd at least like to know how to dot my i's and cross my t's.

And now my lunch break is just about over. Time for more CD shelving!
