Bikes, Blues and BarBQ has arrived in full force here on Dickson Street, and that means the drone of Harleys pretty much 24/7 until Sunday. Charles has become amazingly Zen about it, though he did seem pleased when the bikers suffered a torrential downpour Wednesday night. Everyone else is pretty grumbly about it, and business, of course, will drop sharply; all the people who want to buy books can't get to us because there's a dancing conga line of bikes in the way, and bikers were never really that big on books anyway, even if they feature sweet souped-up big fat hogs.

The bikers are almost *always* nice, though. Loud, boisterous guys and women who just want to drink a lot of beer, listen to classic rock and drive disastrously unsafe vehicles with no mufflers. I can't really be too upset...until it's time to go home and I have to hike a mile to catch a bus, or subject a friend to the sheer parking hell that this street has become. I usually pay in cheeseburgers, if I can.

I jumped out of bed this morning and decided to wander downstairs to my old apartment in a t-shirt and bare feet. Holy cow, what a mistake. Autumn arrived with a vengeance last night, plummeting the temperature by about two dozen degrees. Supposedly, it didn't get above 72 today, and it was *40* and frosty this morning. All right, that's what I'm talking about! :D Now maybe the leaves will start turning.

This weekend, of course, will be busy. Buffy and Angel tonight, Werewolf tomorrow, a sort-of housewarming on Saturday, and...well, somewhere in there I'm going to have to see Serenity at least twice. Because, you know, we all have to do our part to make sure that Joss' feature debut is no. 1 at the box office!

The more news I hear, the more I come to think of our civilization as entering some sort of hospice care. With the news that global warming has caused arctic melting to go 'round the bend, and the fact that those in charge still don't seem to get that something needs to be done yesterday...I'm sort of resigning myself to the idea that we're fucked. A disappointing attitude to take for most people, I'm sure, but really...let's be honest here. It's not only the administration that's being remarkably ostrich-like about this thing, it's around half the United States. How many people are really interested in alternative energy sources, *especially* if they mean a possibly significant disruption in their lifestyles? Complacency and apathy has won out over innovation and long-term thinking. And no matter what miracles I see befalling mankind to change its mind, I can't help but think, "You know, it's too late."

This doesn't mean you can't still care, or even *try* to change things. Nothing defines a man so much as what he does in the face of certain failure. What do you do when you're on a sinking ship you can't escape? We're all in this together. No matter what happens, we should always try to help the people around us. Who knows? We might even surprise ourselves by delivering our own salvation.
