So, I'm writing this from my laptop, because I've been pretty much exiled from anywhere else. I'm not sure if Delphi's network is down, or if *both* Ubuntu Linux CDs he gave me are bad, but the install Did Not Go Well yesterday.

On one CD, everything went well, and we were right up to the point where the login screen was supposed to load. However, Xwindows wouldn't work because of a critical error. (I think I was too sleep-challenged to really understand what I was looking at; in the dream-like haze I can barely remember something about the install not going properly.) There were a lot of errors when the packages were...unpacking, logical errors in sector (insert number here). So, either the install CD is bogus, or...well, there's something wrong with the drive itself.

I tried installing from the same CD today, and I got the same type of error only in different places. I installed from the second CD drive instead of the first, so I'm assuming that the CD itself is bad. The second CD Delphi gave me last night gives me the same error no matter which drive I install from: "No installable kernel found." It's consistent, so, hey, I know it's just a bum thing.

This morning, everything *almost* worked. During the install, I think Ubuntu was trying to download a few things from various websites and they all failed. Security packages and other things that looked to be on varying levels of importance. After a very lengthy bout of it fighting with the servers, it finally finished installing. Got to the login screen, typed in the name and password and everything went OK. All I got, though, was a brown screen with a white bar to the top and bottom, with the mouse cursor right smack in the center. It wouldn't respond to *anything*, so I turned it off (which it let me do). Everything booted up fine the second time, but instead of the login screen I got this weird scrolling color pattern on the right. The left was black. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.

Anyway, I'm learning a few things as I go, which is what this whole thing is all about. Yesterday I was frustrated and short with people (sorry Eliahn), but today I'm just...resigned. Not much I can do about anything until I talk to Delphi again, and/or the network stops being so flaky. In the meantime, I'll probably eat breakfast and try to tackle laundry before work.

Thanks to Lazarus and Delphinios and Eliahn for holding my hand through this. This will be installed, goddamnit. :) Very large hugs to ratty for letting me vent on him and being the constant Shoulder of Support, providing ego-saving praise when required. <:)
