Our kitchen flooded over the weekend! D: Our apartment complex has very old pipes -- probably around 60 years of age at this point -- so some plumbing shenanigans are expected. But this was...an escalation.

As near as I can figure out, something happened upstairs that caused some garbage disposal stuff to back up and completely overfill the sink. The dank water fell onto the floor and *into* every drawer on the side of the sink where we keep our silverware and cooking utensils. But also, our mail-staging area was completely drenched. All in all, a very good excuse to take everything off the counter, do a deep cleaning, and re-arrange things so the kitchen feels more comfortable to me.

Yesterday I did the bulk of the work, taking out the utensils, dumping them in the sink to soak, pulling up the drawer lining (which had soaked a LOT of the dank water) and going over everything with one of those Clorox wipes. The utensils are still drying on the dining room table, and we lucked out with easy access to new drawer liner from our local grocery store!

Tonight's work will be putting in the new drawer liner and re-organizing the utensils. I had done this once before, but the drawer ended up getting messy anyway. Now with everything out, I can put like with like and improve the mise en place, as it were. The kitchen improvement plan continues apace!

Next I'd like to set aside space for the pantry; buying containers for flours, sugars and the like would be nice, and having easier access to baking supplies so I could just you know, whip out a dessert or some bread thing one morning -- that's the dream.

I feel a little bad about this, but I'd like to get an entry-level stand mixer for the kitchen -- which would replace the air fryer R. got me for Christmas. The air fryer DID replace the very nice food processor his family got me for a previous Christmas, though, so I guess that's consistency? The truth is there's just not enough room for everything, but I could also be doing more with less. I'd love to Marie Kondo the kitchen in general, just to "right size" what we have to what we use and what we have space for, but that ultimately leads to a bigger conversation with R. about what to keep, why, and what to do with everything we're giving away.

Some time in the future, I imagine myself spending Sunday in the kitchen prepping meals for the week ahead. Maybe we use our vegetable and meat scraps to make stock, or learn how to bake rolls at home for sandwiches through the week. It would be neat to replace the pre-packaged and over-processed food that we eat a lot outside of Blue Apron with healthier snacks or breakfast/lunch things.
