The End of a Short King
Dec. 5th, 2023 07:57 amYesterday I made pork belly and kimchi fried rice for dinner. Since I hate both of those things, I cooked for R. and K. instead. I was really worried about making fried rice AND a sunny-side-up fried egg in a stainless-steel pan, so I broke out the wok instead. Turned out to be a good choice; it's a good reminder to use the right tool for the right job.
The new thing in the recipe was soaking the sliced pieces in soy sauce for at least ten minutes and *then* adding cornstarch to make sure they're properly coated and crisp up nicely in the pan. They were glazed in soy, rice vinegar, and gojuchang once they were done and served with the fried egg and rice. It looked pretty great, if I do say so myself, and I'm happy with how it turned out, though the pork belly *did* stick in the wok more than I would have liked.
Things were a little discombobulated yesterday so I didn't get off to the best start, but it was still a reasonably productive day. Three of the orders at my day job had to be held due to a few missing bits, so none of the work I did really "counted" toward my total. BUT I did go through the on-hold process with them faster than ever, so that's a good thing. I think I should be able to pass one through and finish the QC check today.
My old Udacity manager pointed me to a potential Instacart job that would be a good win for me. My foot would be in the door of an established company, I'd be doing largely what I do now, and I'd be paid a lot more for it. It wouldn't put me QUITE within my Community Manager salary, but it's still almost twice my current pay.
I honestly hope I get it! It would be great to work for a company with a bit more...life to it, where I'm pushing myself a bit more and there are folks around me who seem more invested in building a nice, collaborative team. I don't know if that's being fair to TSS, but it's...a bit lonely here. There's less of a culture of sharing knowledge and such, though folks are reasonably kind. Maybe it's just the lack of feedback. Who am I kidding? It's definitely the pay.
If I made $80K doing what I do now I would be completely fine with my job. :) Though I would also be a bit more stressed about pulling up my weight.
R. and I started Streaks yesterday, a habit-tracking app that integrates with a lot of other phone apps to automatically keep tabs on you (if you want that). I'm still figuring it out, but it's a very good way to keep track of like, the basic shit I've been trying to get better at. Flossing, for example. Writing. That sort of thing. It might be one of those things we do for a couple weeks before falling off it, so I'll try to engage him on it every day for a month. Maybe I should make a Streak for that?
We're pretty much out of vape cartridges in the Denburrow, which is actually a good thing. That kind of forced break is probably what I need, and since R.'s been here on staycation I haven't really been tempted to put in another delivery order. I'm appreciating the feeling of sobriety a bit more than before; I think that's because I'm more content with things in general. It's not...painful to be mindful of my situation, even though there are definitely things I would like to change. And being sober helps a lot with keeping my head on straight with goals and projects! I could see this being the end of my "heavy user" phase, where I'm just trying to be high like, all the time. Marijuana is feeling more like a sometimes food.
I still haven't made progress on our Christmas list, which is a real shame. I think it might be a good idea to just nix cards for this year and focus on presents for those closest to me. I'm going to play around with a bit of a budget this year -- gifts priced around $50 (or two hours' pay) and a total spend of $1,000. I really don't know if I'll pull it together enough to complete that, but I *do* want to at least hit a couple of "tiers" before Christmas. That means making a list ASAP.
Today's going to be another tight day, it looks like. We'll need to hit the gym right after work and then come right back for a D&D game that runs until 9 PM. After that, likely a late dinner of sheet-pan panko chicken. It might be one of those things I can prep for a little early so everything's ready to go when we're back from gym. That would be nice; that way I can just slip it into the oven and have dinner during the game.
