Running After the Goalposts
Aug. 2nd, 2019 10:05 amFour more days until my 39th birthday! I got a present from Mat earlier this week that he says is more of a "pick-me-up" than anything -- a hat with deer antlers (because I'm a jackalope!) and a queer STEM button that actually looks really neat. :) I'll make time next week to write him a thank you letter and send it along, but I also need to remember that I can actually ping him on Telegram any old time. I'm...not that great about reaching out to folks. >.>
I got a lot done yesterday, even though it wasn't quite everything I needed to do. This week's episode of the Patreon serial is still late, though I think I can finish that today. I didn't get in my run yesterday, so that'll need to happen today. And I'm pretty far behind on my campaign prep for the Pathfinder game running on the 11th, so I need to catch up to that. Things are rapidly progressing to the point where I would start offloading some of the workload, but I feel like I can handle the strain right now and really -- what else am I going to do?
The phone interview at Taos wasn't really much of anything, it turns out. The position the recruiter had in mind for me was filled on Monday, so the call was really more of a 'feeling each other out' kind of thing. Honestly it doesn't sound like a bad set-up for a contracting firm. Basically, they treat their contractors as 'official' employees with full benefits, and they have resources available for career advancement and coaching. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to work with them, at least for a couple of years.
A friend working at LinkedIn also popped up and told me that they need another someone for his position now, so I'll be putting in an application/CV there next week and having lunch with him at the Sunnyvale campus. He likes the company and the people, but apparently the specific project he's working on is giving him fits. I get the feeling that'll be the case no matter where I am -- the work will be frustrating, but the people make it worth it. I'm viewing my next job as a networking opportunity more than anything. It'll be nice to gain new skills and meet new people.
I have a phone interview with Udacity today! It's for a position that I don't actually remember applying to, but that's all right. I'll let them know that I've also thrown my hat into the ring for three other positions as well. I'm hoping that my enthusiasm for working at a MOOC company will get me through for at least one of them. In the meantime, there's still no word from Stanford University OR San Jose State University, and I think that might be down to the strength of my resume. I have a friend working in HR right now, and hopefully I'll be able to do something about that when I meet him this weekend.
Mom's back on her bullshit again. This time, she's refusing to cooperate with the social workers who are trying to renew her Medicaid; if that lapses, then she'll be kicked out of the nursing home with nowhere to go and forced to pay back some of the funds. I've done what I can from here to get her assets down below the upper limit, but there's also a potential issue with her bank account that needs to be addressed. I've put local family on that, so it'll hopefully be sorted out without me needing to do too much of anything.
Today is going to be writing pretty much non-stop. I'll be restarting my blog today, working on the Patreon serial, and trying to catch up on Pathfinder game prep. We've got nothing planned for tonight, so it'll be a relatively restful evening unless we go out to see a movie. Then it'll just be a fun one. :)
