Positive Completion
Aug. 12th, 2005 09:38 amFinished "The Bear Went Over The Mountain" yesterday. It ended where I expected it to, but it took a surprisingly scenic route getting there. This made the ending vaguely unsatisfying; even the Bear was...you felt a sense that he was going to be more or less all right, that the horrible karmic consequences were going to spare him. Somehow, his meager, tarnished innocence would remain intact, even though you're not sure he 'deserved' it. The last scene is actually heart-breaking, for reasons completely unrelated to the Bear. I *have* to send this book to
lazarusrat so he can read it.
Stayed up enormously late last night to catch the supposed meteor shower, which has been moved to tonight when I wasn't looking. Now, I'm in need of coffee. But! I did get to introduce
dancing_deer to the wonder that is "Firefly," though, so it wasn't a complete loss. By the way, if you didn't know, Sci-Fi Channel is playing "Firefly" on Friday nights now ahead of "Battlestar Galactica." I don't know if this means a possibility of first-run episodes, but it's a promising sign. You know what would *literally* make me hot? New episodes of "Firefly," "Battlestar Galactica," and the new "Doctor Who" on Sci-Fi Fridays. I would have to cancel any and all plans for that kind of line-up.
Don + Charles are headed to Little Rock for a Book Expo this morning, so the workers have free reign of the place. Adam's last day is today, as well, so there'll be pizza and cake and soda. I'm thinking a loooong siesta today. :D I worked 11 hours yesterday, and I'll be working 9 today and tomorrow. While this is laughable to complain about among friends in the computer tech industry, it's pretty long haul for book monkies. I'm trying to build my hours slowly for a possible two-week hiatus in December, whereupon I'll travel to CA to see my lovely, lovely otter (:9), a green roo and ottsel, perhaps, and Indiana to see a certain ratty.
One of the Jonesboro shooters gets out of juvenile hall today, and chances are good he'll be going free after that. Arkansas is getting a bit of national attention now; the editor-in-chief of the rinkydink Jonesboro paper even had an interview with Melissa Block of NPR yesterday. I was very impressed; bacon was not mentioned even once. A lot of folks in Jonesboro are pretty upset that he hasn't served 'enough time,' but...commenting on this would lead me to a rant on the ineffectiveness of the corrections system as it currently is, and...I don't have enough coffee for that sort of thing, truly I don't. All I will say is I hope this kid understands what he's done. I hope that he knows how much pain and suffering he's caused to an entire town, and how those deaths will be with him for the rest of his life. And I hope that he feels remorse, and has repented in whatever way he sees fit. Like I said, though, given the state of our corrections system, I doubt that this is the case.
I'm...really not sure what's going on tonight. It could be "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as usual, or
arlekin might be running a Werewolf game. I'm playing a Gurahl (werebear). I've developed quite the fondness for bears, recently. I wonder if Rabbit has anything to do with this.
