To See The World Beyond Your Front Door
Apr. 3rd, 2005 11:14 amWell, this is a fine weekend!
Friday, went to go see "Sin City," the latest piece of ultra-violence sure to get people's knickers in a twist...or something. Actually, I'm surprised more people aren't raising a stink about it, with it's blatant sexuality, pretty frequent violence against women (granted, the women are plenty violent too, and men are...emasculated quite often), and well, rampant splashes of gore. But then maybe people realize stylized fiction when they see it...finally. Rodriguez makes very good use of shading and color to really punch down the gore and punch up objects of desire. Alexis Biedel's blue eyes are simply magnetic, and there's nothing creepier than Elijah Wood's unblinking stare. I really wouldn't want to play poker with that dude.
A couple of people expressed surprise that I liked the movie as much as I did, because it's filled with so many broken and violent anti-heroes. For all their flaws, though, Sin City's characters are still basically good people who try to do the right thing. And for all their cavorting around and chopping up the back alley's other residents, they *do* hold to some higher ideal, whether it be love, or justice, or just a notion of what people they care about should and shouldn't put up with. For all the dirt and grime and bleakness, there's still a purity of vision that drives these people. And to me, that's what makes it worth watching.
So yeah, if you can put up with women being slapped and testicles being removed in various and sundry ways, it's definitely worth a look.
Yesterday I hung out with Virginia a lot. We had breakfast at Denny's (overpriced as usual, but good), then played mini-golf with
stickypawz. My day wasn't *too* good, but his was worse, and I won despite shooting 42 (par is 40). Maybe we can get another game in this afternoon or something. ;)
Today will be consisting of mainly trying to get my act together before watching WrestleMania 21(!!). It's my first wrestling PPV ever, and I'm really looking forward to watching Batista beat the snot out of Triple H. It shall be glorious, the ring will run red with blood. ;)
The work situation seems to be somewhat resolved. I'll be working Friday nights on a rotating basis with two other coworkers, at least for now. I'm really hoping that I can get my schedule changed so that I work Saturday nights. The Bookshop doesn't close too late and I'll have plenty of time to party. Also, it'll get them off my back about not working weekends. Having Sunday and Monday completely off would be kind of neat, come to think of it.
And now, a quiz:

You're a Narrative writer!
What kind of writer are you?
brought to you by Quizilla
Yeah, actually, that sounds about right. I like dialogue, but even that's peppered with a lot of thick description to establish mood. So *much* in conversation is body language, and I love trying to capture the exact meaning of a line beyond words. This reminds me that
writerrabbit hasn't been updated in a few days. Bad me.
