And After The Town Cries Wolf...
Jan. 7th, 2002 07:43 amHey there.
It's been a pretty fun and relaxed weekend; I didn't really write anything, and I had a rather disappointing and sub-par game, but overall things were good. :)
I got paid Friday, like I do every week...and I was broke again about 3 hours later. I hate bills. :P But at least I don't have to worry about them for another month, and I can save money for glasses!
I've come up with quite a few ideas for more stories, and that's only pressing me to finish up with what I've got going so far. I've re-discovered how much music can rock for inspiration; while going over a tape I'm mixing for a friend, my mind was flooded with all sorts of stuff. I felt like an alienated teenager again, only it felt good and cathartic. Hmm...not quite sure I'm explaining that correctly. :)
People are in all sorts of arms over the MTV Sex2k Special. For those brilliantly wonderful furs in Canada (*wink*) who don't know what that is...well, it's a typical Gen-Xer shockumentary all about weird and deviant sexual lifestyles...and guess what their topic du jour was? "Furries and Plushies". While a lot of the acts portrayed in the special (which wasn't *really* all that bad, just aggravating) do go on, it insinuated very *heavily* that all furries were were folks who liked to have sex in fursuits. I spotted at least two people who fursuit for a living that could possibly lose their job over this; otherwise, a lot of the alarm is just the same stuff people said when the Vanity Fair article came out.
While I do understand why people would be upset over this, I think a lot of what's going on is over-reacting and just...furs making the same mistakes they've always made regarding the media. Yote isn't a bad, attention-starved pervert; he's just a young, nice guy who got manipulated into telling details that were really no one else's business. And now people are backing away from the fandom, pointing fingers, flinging rumours and standing on soapboxes...
And you know what? This very same thing will happen again sometime in the future.
Look, people, we *should* be talking to the media, not hiding from it. If we're upset at the way furry is being portrayed, we should make sure it doesn't get portrayed that way. Simple as that. Let's talk about the charity we do, the creativity we possess, our worth as people...and let's leave what goes on in the bedroom out of it, huh? Yes, fetishes are a part of the fandom, and I'm not going to deny I've got a few of my own...but it's nobody's god-damned business what I get off on.
I'm a fur, and I'm proud of it, and I'm not afraid to say it when a reporter sticks a mike in my face. But I don't have to mention any sordid details about my freaky (virtual) sex life, either.
*whew* Glad I got that off my chest.
Anyway, off to more writing and tape-mixing; the game summary'll be up sometime within the next few days.
Sylvan and Blackfeather, I really miss seeing you guys around on-line. Hope we can meet up soon. :)
That's all for now.
