Hey there, all...

Got off work and saw not one but *two* movies. Eat your heart out, Ebert.

First up, "28 Days Later," a post-apocalyptic zombie horror film from across the pond and whatnot. MAN was it...scary. Normally, I don't really 'get' zombies and I'm not really afraid of them, but this movie...I'll be sleeping with the light on tonight.

The craziest thing is that the movie is relatively low-key. Full of dry British humor and wit, the true horror is really understated. The director (unfortunately, his name escapes me at the moment) is an absolute master at letting the thick weight of mood descend on the movie to the point you can never really shake it off. Even when things are 'good,' there's this sense of urgency, of low-lying fear just waiting to come back and bite you in the ass as soon as the sun goes down. And not to give anything away, but the greatest danger doesn't come from the zombies.

I highly recommend it. Tense, frightening, and very well done. :)

Came back home, grabbed a few more people, and then we went for a brief interlude at Shogun (chicken teppanyaki :9) followed by "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Of course, this being the sequel there's just...more. The explosions are bigger, the fight scenes are more daring, the Creepy Thin Man is...well, beyond creepy. It was very loud and flippant and definitely made for the MTV generation, not old fogeys like me. ;) Despite myself I liked it! I (heart) Drew Barrymore!

One interesting thing I noticed...the bad guy (Demi Moore) mentions an interesting thing about how the Angels service had changed between the time she had presumably been employed and the new super-cute Angels of the Millennium. "We used guns." You (well, I) never really noticed that none of the 'good guys' ever really resort to lethal violence, and in the movie, even, no one really dies though there are car crashes, tanks, buildings, signs, little golden canisters exploding all over the place. It was almost like watching a real-life cartoon. I'm not quite sure how I feel about this.

And one more thing...it's really creepy to see the director from "Mulholland Dr." as a lean, tattooed and thoroughly violent Irish mobster.

Now, I have to hurry up and polish off critiques and assignments for Mustsy. :)
