June 20th

It is three in the morning
and the moon smiles down on the city
as it stirs fitfully in its sleep.
Inside this little box,
the heat has broken enough
for underwear and bare chests
underneath thin sheets.
We lie there,
you with the worry of replacing
your credit cards, your identity,
me with the worry of replacing
the world when it's gone.
Melodramatic, I know, but the scene replays
as it has at least once a week
since I was six:
the heavens betray us,
and we close our eyes,
so small, so unprepared,
and pray for death
or life after this.
How many people, I wonder,
have tossed under the same smiling, peaceful moon
fully aware of the fragility of joy,
wondering how to accept carefully
the cracked eggshell of our lives?
