Focus. Commitment. Fun!
Yesterday was a National Holiday, and no one can tell me any different! We, of course, went to a house party where the Big Game was on but our hosts made it thoughtfully easy to tune it out by inviting a ton of very cool people to talk to. So that's what I did!
The house party is an annual tradition where the hosts at least try to feature snacks from the cities that are playing. It can get a little old when the same two teams show up again and again, like, say, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. I guess we're going to have to go with BBQ again!
We also had a cocktail featuring Kansas City bourbon, a host of cheeses, Sun Chips, It's Its for dessert, some house-made sushi, Mai Tais, and locally-sourced chips, guacamole and salsa. Honestly not a bad spread overall; the bourbon cocktail packed a nice punch.
Mostly it was nice catching up with people. It was the largest party the hosts had thrown since the pandemic and they do a pretty good job of inviting folks from social circles that don't always overlap. I've learned that half the secret to throwing a good party is simply the guest list. If you fill a room with fun, personable, interesting people, the fun makes itself.
In my personal calendar, it feels like the Super Bowl party is the last gasp of the holiday season. The next big get-togethers will usher in the summer with backyard grilling, session IPAs and the like. That won't happen until May or June, so we've got a few months before that whole circuit starts up again. THIS is the time where you can turn your focus inward and knuckle down into a routine. So...guess what I'll be trying this week?
As of this Monday I'm about halfway through the season and I've made absolutely no progress on any of my goals. Given everything that's happened with the day job -- and settling into the exercise routine -- I'm not too upset about it but now it's time to regroup and make another push. The plan right now is to break up the rest of Winter 2024 into three two-week sprints, each with a goal of improving on the process of making a habit.
This week, the job is to *just* build the habit. Meditate. Write. Read. These three activities need to happen every day, so I need at least 90 minutes just for me. Carving out that boundary -- and using that time for what it's intended -- is the challenge here.
Today I woke up at 7 AM instead of 6, so I didn't meditate but I did get in my daily walk. We're playing Witchlight tonight -- presumably anyway -- so there'll be a little bit of time after work for meditation and reading. Though if I'm making dinner before the game that might tighten things up a little. Either way, perspective matters a lot. If this is a game where I'm trying to find time to steal for an activity that's fun or exciting, it's more engaging than "Oh god, when am I gonna find time to do all this stuff I've told myself I'd do"?
Focus. Commitment. Fun. :) Those are the watch words of the week.
