As a small "thank-you" present to myself, I bought "A Place in Space" by Gary Snyder, who I've come to like best of all beat poets...ever. Granted, haven't had terribly exhaustive experience with them all, but so far Snyder in general seems to be my favorite.

The incredible thing about this book is not only is this the first printing, but it also contains a postcard written by Snyder to a friend he calls Andy. I kind of feel wrong for having it. :) Was this meant for another person's eyes? Probably not, but that's the way things go. I'm thoroughly convinced that nothing is truly private in the end; people have a habit of finding out things about you that you wish would remain hidden.

Still working out the budget for the trip to Australia next summer. I'm thinking that my goal of $5000 before then is going to be pretty difficult unless I can supplement my income every once in a while. It's not that I'm not making enough to get it all (I'm clearing that hurdle *barely), but I'm not as good at pretending I'm totally poor as I should be. :) A lot of it can be blamed on sickness; I've been sleeping in a lot more because I'm spending a good bit of time coughing and staying up nights. But then there's just me being lazy to consider too, and that's probably the more honest of my reasons.

I didn't quite realize people would hate Thomas Covenant so much. :D I'll have to jump into the fray after I've read the first book. Already my attention is being pulled away; in addition to Snyder, I bought a book of writing essays by a few Japanese fellows throughout time, and a book on Buddhism and psychotherapy by Mark Epstein. I'm peeling my eyes for the new book by Stephen Batchelor; the title escapes me at the moment, but it's about an agnostic-Buddhist take on evil (Mara). I read an excerpt of it in Tricycle and it was pretty cool. Batchelor rocks. ;)

Erk! Work calls.
